A Virgin Islands wedding does not ask your guests to choose between a beautiful ceremony and an actual vacation. St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John sit inside the same stretch of Caribbean blue water, each with a different pace and a different kind of beautiful, and each one genuinely welcomes weddings, not just tourists. Most major U.S. cities have direct flights, U.S. citizens do not need a passport, and the setting does a great deal of the decorating for you. Whether you are picturing a quiet ceremony on a Christiansted beach at sunset or a larger celebration overlooking Magens Bay, the islands give you the backdrop without the overseas planning headache.
We have a personal reason for building this page. Vowlio co-founder Verla is having her own wedding here, a real vow renewal in Christiansted, St. Croix, filmed as part of our series The Redo. We are not recommending these islands from a brochure. We are planning a real wedding on them right now, learning firsthand what a couple needs to pull off a Virgin Islands wedding from a distance, and building that knowledge directly into Vowlio as we go.
St. Croix: Historic Towns, Quiet Beaches
The largest of the three islands and the site of Verla's own wedding, St. Croix pairs Danish colonial architecture in Christiansted and Frederiksted with beaches that rarely feel crowded. It suits couples who want a wedding that feels like a real place rather than a resort backdrop, with rum distilleries, coral reefs, and a walkable historic waterfront for guests to explore between wedding events.
St. Thomas: Resorts, Nightlife, Easy Travel
The most visited of the three islands, St. Thomas has the most direct flights, the widest range of resorts and venues, and the most built-out infrastructure for hosting a wedding party of any size. Magens Bay is consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. If your guest list is large or your planning timeline is tight, St. Thomas is usually the easiest island to manage logistically.
St. John: Small, Wild, and Mostly National Park
More than half of St. John is protected national park land, which makes it a strong choice for couples who want their wedding photos to look genuinely untouched. It is the smallest and quietest of the three islands, reached only by ferry, and better suited to an intimate ceremony than a large reception.
