Industry data puts the average wedding at over a dozen hired vendors, which sounds like a lot until you actually list them out. Here is where that number comes from, and where you can realistically trim it.
The Truly Essential Vendors
- Venue
- Catering, unless the venue includes it
- Photographer
- Officiant
Technically, that is the entire required list. Everything past this point is a choice, not a requirement, even though it rarely feels that way in the middle of planning.
The Common But Optional Layer
- Videographer
- Florist or decorator
- DJ or live music
- Hair and makeup artist
- Wedding planner or day-of coordinator
Most weddings include several of these, but none of them are strictly necessary, especially for smaller or more casual celebrations.
How Guest Count Changes the Number
A wedding under 50 guests can often skip a day-of coordinator entirely, since there is simply less to manage. A wedding over 150 almost always benefits from one, purely because there are more moving pieces than two people getting married can realistically track themselves on the actual day.
Where Couples Over-Hire Without Realizing It
Overlapping services, like a videographer and a photographer who both offer similar coverage, or a florist and a decorator with overlapping scope, are common places where couples end up paying two vendors for work one could largely cover.
The right number of vendors is not a fixed number. It is whatever covers what actually matters to you, without paying twice for the same thing.
